I see this in simpler terms. This generation is the first to have the whole world delivered to them on a screen. It’s a world of memes with no context. The Che shirt, the communist-themed accessories, the bikes... It’s created a cultural malaise — like a king that sits disenchanted on the throne as group after group passes in front of him in a desperate attempt to engender enthusiasm, and the king sighs, “Next.” In present day, each meme is presented and blogged, each person posts a comment, deeming it “cool” or “uncool,” the votes are tallied, each hipster picks from a buffet of “validated” memes, and there you go.
